Bonin Island Outrigger Canoe

This was the beaching area for fishing canoes (the Administration building can be seen in the background). Pictured above is Abel Savory with two sea turtles and one of the many langustas he captured that day while skin diving. Sea life was abundant and delicious! In addition to being a good fisherman Abel was also a skilled wood carver as evinced by the model outrigger canoe he made for me. Although replaced long ago by outboard motors, the sail and rigging were often carried when traveling to distant islands in case of mechanical problems.
